There are imposters to the monarch that we are seeing everywhere, but once in a while, we see the real thing! I find the monarch much more skittish, and that's probably just one more way to survive the 4000 mile migration home this time of year. There is a copycat called the
Viceroy that I could mistake it for, but the most common imposter here is called the Painted Lady (even prettier named Vanessa in Latin!). Up close, the body and interior part of the wings is a brown colour, and it's closed wings make it seem like a collage between a monarch butterfly and a moth!
